    The cold is coming for the Volunteer State.

    During the first week of December, temperatures are expected to drop below freezing in Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis. Until December 5, Knoxville will see temperatures between 22 and 54 degrees. Nashville will experience temperatures as low as 14 degrees and as high as 54 degrees. In Memphis, temperatures are expected to range between 25 degrees and 56 degrees.

    Wind chill can make already freezing temperatures even colder.

    Will it snow in Tennessee?

    This kind of weather is not abnormal to see in December, but it is colder than Tennessee’s seasonal averages.

    In East Tennessee, there is a risk of “heavy snow” December 2-7 in East Tennessee. There is a slight chance of snow overnight on December 4 in parts of East Tennessee. Snow showers are possible on November 30 and December 1.

    Light snow accumulations are possible in areas of high terrain, according to the National Weather Service.

    With the La Niña event, Tennessee is expected to experience warmer than average temperatures during the height of winter, according to the Climate Predictions Center. For Tennessee, there is a 33 to 40 percent chance that temperatures will be warmer than usual, according to the report.

    And while this event generally means drier conditions in the South, the northern part of Tennessee should see slightly above average precipitation, but don’t expect snow.

    Meteorologically speaking Winter begins on December 1st. But many recognize the winter solstice, which falls on December 21, as the first true day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, according to the Farmer’s Almanac.

    How to Weatherize Your Car for Winter

    Before subzero temperatures arrive, it is important to prepare your car for the cold. The National Weather Service recommends keeping your gas tank nearly full to prevent ice in the tank and fuel lines. Additionally, you should check the fluid levels to make sure they are full.

    The National Weather Service also recommends packing a “winter survival kit” that includes basic items such as a blanket, batteries, nonperishable food, first aid kit, tow rope, fender scraper -breeze and much more.

    How to Adjust Your Thermostat During the Winter Months

    THE The Department of Energy recommends setting the temperature to 68 degrees Fahrenheit in winter weather. A temperature close to 70 degrees is a good number to aim for when it’s cold.
