Man in stable condition after early morning shooting, Cafe Hollywood CO revoked

Albany police are currently investigating a shooting that occurred early Sunday morning on Lark Street that sent a man to the hospital — which has now led to the business’s certificate of occupancy being revoked.

At approximately 1:05 a.m., officers responded to Cafe Hollywood located at 275 Lark Street to receive reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers learned that a 32-year-old man had been shot in the abdomen while inside the establishment.

Police say the victim was self-transported to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he was located by officers, and is currently in stable condition.

The suspect fled before the police arrived.

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan released the following statement:

“Overnight, a shooting took place at Café Hollywood, located at 275 Lark Street. The City of Albany’s primary obligation is to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors and therefore, after consulting with the Albany Police Department, the Corporation Law Department and the Department of Buildings and regulatory compliance, the decision has been made to revoke the certificate of occupancy of Café Hollywood with immediate effect. The business will remain closed indefinitely and inspectors from the Department of Buildings and Regulatory Compliance will regularly inspect the property to ensure it remains unoccupied.

The business has been the site of violence in the past and was closed for a time in 2021 due to “harmful property” because of that. They were allowed to reopen later in the year, with restrictions including changes to capacity and closing times, and no entertainment.

Ella Montelone, executive director of Lark Street Purchase Offersent the following statement regarding the closure:

“We support the city’s decision to close Cafe Hollywood after recent reports of criminal activity. For more details on this closure, please contact the Mayor’s Office. The Lark BID works closely with the city and law enforcement However, this closure highlights the urgent need for an increased police presence along the corridor.

The Lark Street corridor is a vibrant and creative community of artists and entrepreneurs, and recent incidents do not define the eclectic community of small businesses and residents. We are actively working with city officials and law enforcement to advocate for increased resources, better coordination, and tangible solutions to restore confidence in the safety of our neighborhood.

We are committed to working with our community to collaboratively address these challenges. It is imperative that we continue to take swift and decisive action to protect the businesses that form the backbone of our local economy and ensure a safe environment for all. »

At this time, the investigation is still ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Albany Police Detective Division at (518) 462-8039.
