2024 Section V Football Playoffs: Vote for First Round Winners

The Section V football playoffs start this weekend and call it a reset.

The season’s win-loss records still stand, but somehow the section teams are all 0-0. From there, three, in some cases two, wins clinch a championship.

Vote below for who you think will win. Polling stations will close at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Last week, readers were 1-1 on their choices and are now 16-6 this season.

Here are three games to highlight this weekend in the first round of the Section V football tournaments:

Class A – No. 5 Monroe (6-2) at No. 4 Irondequoit (7-1), 6 p.m. Friday

Neither team has won against one of Section V’s best, so that will change after this game. No offense has scored against Monroe in three weeks, while the Red Jackets’ second-year quarterback Terrell Cunningham Jr. ran 300 yards or more the last two. Monroe’s ground game is also a weapon for the Red Jackets, thanks to senior running back Tajmir Mullins.

Irondequoit also likes to run its running game. It works with Cam Freeman And Myles Wynn with the ball in his hands. The success of these and other Irondequoit running backs often leads to a downfield hit for the quarterback Taiden Makubire. The Irondequoit Eagles defense against Monroe’s offense might be the most interesting matchup.

Vote now:

Class A – No. 6 Webster Schroeder (5-3) at No. 3 Canandaigua (7-1), 7 p.m. Friday

While Webster Schroeder can prove himself to be a dangerous top seed, Canandaigua is trying to maintain his resemblance to a sectional title contender.

The Webster Schroeder Warriors are hot, winning their last five games. Win this game and this winning streak becomes a more popular topic. Canandaigua’s offense has a senior running back Trey Comella to move the ball forward. When that doesn’t happen, senior quarterback Drew Williamee is capable of converting third down and long situations. Canandaigua’s defense has been good against running teams, but can expect to be tested by Schroeder’s passing game, including at receiver. Tyler Washington.

Vote now:

Class AA – Hilton (5-3) at University Prep (5-3), 2 p.m. Saturday

Hilton is trying to reverse a slow decline, including a 31-14 loss last week at home to Aquinas. University Prep wants to stay hot and extend its winning streak to four games.

The Hilton Cadets can maintain control with their running game producing long drives. Longest running back JJ Di Battisto and the teammates have the ball, the less the opponents have it. UPrep has seen this strategy more than once this fall. Can the Griffins hold up to Hilton’s running game, “getting off the field” as you hear from coaches and TV announcers? UPrep’s win last week fell short of season highlights, but the team’s defense led by linebacker Taivon Wilson gave the Griffins offense time to get its act together.

Another confrontation in class AA, the group of schools with the largest number of students. Fairport’s unbeaten streak was ended last week by University Prep. The Red Raiders have another chance to impress, this time against the winner of the last five Section V Class AA championships.

McQuaid’s loss came on a Hail Mary pass against University Prep. Unlike most of McQuaid’s games this season, there was no drama in the final minutes of the fourth quarter last week. The Knights won flawlessly, 35-13 at Pittsford Sutherland.
