Indian Constitution is a living, progressive document, says President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu said the Indian Constitution is a living and progressive document through which the country has achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development.

Addressing an event to launch the year-long celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, Murmu recalled the contribution of the 15 women members of the Constituent Assembly in crafting the document.

“Our Constitution is a living and progressive document. Through our Constitution, we have achieved the goals of social justice and inclusive development,” she said.

She spoke at a joint sitting of both houses of Parliament at the historic Samvidhan Sadan Central Hall.

The government has announced that a new website – https://constitution75.com – has been created to enable citizens to engage with the legacy of the Constitution through interactive activities and resources.

The Constituent Assembly met for the first time in New Delhi on December 9, 1946, in the central hall of the old Parliament building. The dedicated website allows people to discover the historical facets of the Constitution and its legendary creators.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also participated in the celebrations.

The government issued a commemorative coin and stamp to mark the occasion.

The iconic old Parliament building, an architectural splendor and historic monument designed by Sir Herbert Baker who guided India’s destiny for almost a century, was inaugurated on January 18, 1927 by the Viceroy of India. time, Lord Irwin.

Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the new Parliament building on May 28, 2023. Soon after, the old Parliament building was renamed as ‘Samvidhan Sadan’ and the work was shifted to the modern complex erected nearby.

While the Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, it came into force on January 26, 1950, when India became a republic.
