What is a freeze warning? Oklahoma under cold weather alert this week

play

Oklahoma City woke up to its first “frost” of the season Tuesday morning, just in time for the holidays.

In OKC, temperatures dropped to 26°Fwhile further south, at Lawton, it was 29°F. The National Weather Service has issued a ‘frost warning’ for much of central and southern Oklahoma.

Here’s what you need to know about cold weather alerts, including “freeze warnings.”

What is a freeze warning?

According to the National Weather Service, a freeze warning is issued when temperatures are expected to remain below 32°F for an extended period of time.

These temperatures will kill some commercial crops and residential plants, but prolonged temperatures below 28°F will kill most plants and crops.

Other cold weather alerts to know

It is important to know what cold weather alerts mean in advance, so you can take appropriate precautions when they are issued. This is especially true this year since the National Weather Service recently updated its terminology, replacing its “wind chill” advisories, watches and warnings with new alerts.

Here’s what the new cold weather alerts mean:

  • Extreme cold warning: This warning is issued when “dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values are expected or occurring.” Anyone subject to an extreme cold warning should avoid going outside, but if you must go out, dress in layers, covering exposed skin, and make sure at least one other person knows where you are.
  • Extreme cold monitoring: This watch is issued when “dangerously cold air temperatures or wind chill values” could occur. Adjust your plans to avoid being outside during the coldest parts of the day. Make sure your car has at least half a tank of gas and update your winter survival kit.
  • Cold weather warning: This advisory is issued when temperatures or wind chill values are expected to be or are “seasonably cold,” but not dangerously so. Dress appropriately and cover exposed skin when going outside.
