California sea lion dies at West Edmonton Mall

Visitors to West Edmonton Mall will see one less creature cheering at Sea Lions’ Rock.

The mall announced Monday that their “beloved” California sea lion, Clara, had died.

Clara, who was 30, had “long outlived” the life expectancy of a California sea lion, typically only 15 to 20 years old, the mall said Monday.

“Clara had so much personality – she was sweet, kind and caring, but also strong and decisive,” officials said in a social media post.

The mall says Clara was born at Blackpool Zoo in England on June 16, 1994. She arrived in Edmonton in October 2004 with two other sea lions, Kelpie and her younger brother Pablo.

“In recent years, Clara has really started to show her age. As her vision and mobility diminished at dusk, we adapted how we worked with her,” WEM said.

Ramps, audio cues instead of visual cues, and a moving sled in the pool were all adjustments made to help Clara feel comfortable and welcome to retirement.

Clara was known for her “strength and grace in her distinctive, beautiful backflips in the pool.”

Mall says her coaches often joked that she could make it through the entire sea lion show without any help and that losing her was like “losing a co-worker.”

In her younger years, Clara was also known for being a teacher to other sea lions. She taught Quinty “how to be a sea lion” and worked with new trainers.

To honor Clara, WEM is asking people to donate to Hope for Wildlife, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife.
