ENEC and ADNOC partner to support UAE’s energy diversification

Tuesday November 26, 2024

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and the government’s diversified energy group ADNOC will assess the deployment of advanced nuclear technologies such as small modular reactors to support the UAE’s energy diversification strategy, and will explore the possibility of using the excess heat from the Barakah nuclear power plant in ADNOC. oil and gas operations.

A strategic collaboration agreement to research and explore the development of innovative energy solutions to improve energy efficiency, signed by the two companies, involves a comprehensive technical and economic assessment to identify nuclear reactor technologies best suited for ADNOC leveraging ENEC’s expertise in evaluating technological performance in pilot projects. as well as future technologies under development, ENEC said.

The agreement also covers feasibility studies to assess possibilities for utilizing surplus heat from Barakah, with recommendations on advanced technologies that can be demonstrated through existing or future pilot projects.

Ahmed Al Mazrouei, Vice President of Nuclear Research and Development at ENEC, said the collaboration was an important step in the company’s ongoing commitment to advancing new technologies and driving research and development in the energy sector of the United Arab Emirates. “By focusing on cutting-edge nuclear innovations and exploring new methods to harness excess heat for industrial applications, we are strengthening the UAE’s green economy. Together with ADNOC, we will leverage our combined technical capabilities and expertise to identify and develop nuclear solutions that improve energy security and sustainability in parallel,” he said.

“By collaborating with ENEC, we will explore the deployment of small modular nuclear reactors while developing innovative energy solutions to improve our operational efficiency,” said Ali Al Rawahi, ADNOC Senior Vice President for Technology and Operations. innovation. “Our partnership underscores our mutual commitment to developing a reliable, clean source of energy, as well as developing pioneering advances in low-carbon energy and technological innovation.

Founded in 1971, ADNOC – Abu Dhabi National Oil Company – is a diversified energy group, with a network of fully integrated companies operating across the energy value chain. The company, which already claims to be one of the lowest carbon-intensive oil and gas producers in the world, has allocated an initial $23 billion to advance and accelerate low-carbon solutions, and invests in new energy and decarbonization technologies to achieve its ambition of net zero emissions by 2045 and commitment to zero methane emissions by 2030.

The new collaboration aligns with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050, which aims to increase the contribution of clean energy sources and improve energy efficiency across the country, ENEC said.

The fourth and final unit of ENEC’s Barakah nuclear power plant entered commercial operation in September. The plant now generates 40 TWh per year, the equivalent of 25% of the UAE’s electricity needs, while avoiding the release of 22.4 million tonnes of carbon per year.
