Thanksgiving is coming! Here’s what you need to know about freezing sauce

Ree Drummond has a motto for herself Thanksgiving Dinner: “If the sauce is good, everything is good,” she says. So, you don’t want to forget to make the sauce! Unfortunately, with all the others Thanksgiving Side Dishes do, one turkey in the oven, and pie crust decoration to contend with, sauce can sometimes become an afterthought. That’s why Ree opts for her make-ahead sauce recipe which can be prepared up to five days in advance. “This will save you time (and headaches) on your big day,” she says. But what if you want to think a little further ahead, say weeks or even months in advance. So, you may be wondering: can you freeze sauce?

Of course, the answer to this question will also come in handy if you have leftover sauce at the end of the feast. After all, you don’t want to waste that tasty sauce! So if you don’t plan on pouring sauce on your Thanksgiving Leftovers the next day, here’s how to store the sauce in the freezer. Next, check out our tips for reheating the sauce once you’re ready to use it. It will be useful for any weeknight dinner served with a side of mashed potatoesbut you can also use it to thicken soups or make a shepherd’s pie using both leftover turkey and leftover sauce!

Can you freeze the sauce?

The short answer to this question: Yes, you can freeze the sauce! Whether you are looking for a make-ahead Thanksgiving recipe or a way to preserve every drop of your leftovers, freezing your sauce is an easy option. But there’s one caveat: if your sauce contains cream or milk (like this one sausage gravy), then it will not freeze well. So this brings us to the next question…

What is the sauce made from?

Gravy is simply a pan sauce made with the meat juices and thickened with flour or starch. But add a little fat, broth, and seasonings, and it will become the rich, flavorful holiday favorite you know and love. For Ree’s turkey gravy, she uses homemade turkey brothbutter, flour, Worcestershire sauce and, of course, turkey juice. Some people may add cream or milk, but if you plan to freeze a sauce, it’s best to leave this ingredient out, as dairy can cause your sauce to separate once thawed.

How to freeze sauce?

Freezing sauce is easy to do! Simply prepare your favorite sauce recipe and let it cool completely. Then pour it into an airtight container or even an ice cube tray (if you only want to use a little at a time) and put it in the freezer. According to the USDAit will last four to six months.

How do you reheat frozen sauce?

Once you are ready to put this sauce to good use, you can thaw it in the refrigerator overnight. To reheat the sauce, transfer it to a saucepan or skillet, place over low heat and stir often until heated through. You’ll have a perfect sauce in no time!
