The parking lot closed for the first time in 2022 so it could be demolished to accommodate a five-story hotel expected to open next year.

A city council has said it hopes people will turn to “greener travel” as an underground car park with 23 electric vehicle charging spaces was opened in a town centre.

The Park Street car park in Cambridge welcomed its first visitors on Tuesday after closing in January 2022 for main works and demolition.

The old building on the site has been demolished to make room for a five-story, 229-room hotel, expected to open next year.

Simon Smith, executive councilor for finance and resources at Cambridge City Council, said: “The opening of Park Street represents a real milestone for the council. »

The facility offers 223 underground parking spaces, including 23 electric vehicle (EV) charging spaces. It also has 200 spaces equipped with cables and power supplies so that outlets can be added for more charging facilities if needs increase.

The new spaces are part of a wider commitment by the city council to install 800 electric vehicle chargers in car parks across the city.

There is also secure parking for 239 bicycles, 10 oversized bicycles and 20 motorcycles.

Ling Yohoya was able to mark her first trip to Cambridge by being the first person to park in the new car park

Ling Yohoya was the first person to park in the newly opened parking lot and was visiting the city from Malaysia.

He said: “This is actually my first visit to Cambridge… I feel honored to have the privilege of being the first visitor to this car park.”

The building’s reopening suffered a “significant delay” and was due to reopen in August.

Cambridge City Council said there had been “unprecedented weather conditions, compliance and regulatory changes requiring additional work, as well as supply chain issues”.

He said the the delay was caused by a “failure of the contractor to install the electrical connection”.

While the parking lot has more than 200 spaces for cars, it has more spaces for bicycles.

Smith said the council decided to invest in the project because of the “aging” of the old facility.

He said: “This has presented us with the opportunity to develop new facilities which will play an important role in helping people move towards greener travel options through electric vehicle charging and significantly improved facilities for secure bicycle parking.

“The aparthotel will provide much-needed revenue to support essential services to residents, as well as a boost for local businesses…this is a significant renovation for the city center’s heavily used facility .”
