Walsall debrief: Luck favored the brave on a not-so-great night for the Saddlers

Liam Gordon opened the scoring for Walsall as half-time approached before goals from Michael Cheek and Danny Imray put Bromley in the lead.

Walsall looked destined for a second home defeat of the season until Okagbue put the ball over the line with the final kick of the game.

Here we take a look at the main talking points from Tuesday’s draw.

Luck favors the brave

It was far from vintage and Walsall can count themselves lucky to have salvaged a point, but the fact that they did so says a lot about the character of this team.

Walsall missed the chance to close the gap behind league leaders Port Vale to just one point, but can consider it a point earned based on performance.

They looked disjointed at times and their inability to spot the final pass proved a frustrating theme. Jack Earing and George Hall were recalled for rare starts and showed flashes of quality in the first half although they both faded after the break.

Walsall ultimately had to pay for a flat start to the second half and Bromley were ruthless in their execution. But Walsall have made a habit of scoring late goals with the most after 90 minutes (three) in the division.

And Okagbue delivered another late heroic moment to save Walsall from the jaws of defeat and keep them firmly in the early promotion hunt.

It’s been a special few weeks for Okagbue. He made his debut for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s and cemented his international exploits by setting up Nathan Lowe’s winning goal at AFC Wimbledon at the weekend.

The defender inadvertently picked up another assist when his headed clearance sent Gordon racing away from the Bromley defense to score the opener. And he then added the icing on the cake with his first goal since returning to the club permanently this summer.

Is possession the key?

Bromley clearly arrived at Bescot with a game plan and made life difficult for Walsall who were tasked with keeping more of the ball than they are usually used to.

In fact, Walsall have had less possession than the opposition in each of their nine league wins and have collected just one victory in League Two after holding the majority of the ball during Mat Sadler’s reign.

Walsall have traditionally been a low-possession team under Sadler. Although it has been a huge success this season, there is still a fear that they will sometimes find themselves stuck against teams that sit, as demonstrated in the 1-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers earlier in the season and the 0-0 stalemate at Accrington Stanley in October. .

Key period

Walsall are three points off the top of the league but can boast a game in hand against leaders Port Vale who they face next Saturday after hosting fellow promotion contenders Notts County in midweek.
