Improved offensive line performance helped Auburn win over Kentucky

Performance improved by Auburn Tigers The offensive line was a key factor in the victory against Kentucky last week.

This allowed us to go back Jarquez Hunter will rush for 278 yardserasing his previous career high of 183 yards that he set in Auburn’s 2023 win over Vanderbilt.

Despite having Hunter in the backfield as well as other talented running backs Damari Alston and Jeremiah Cobb, Auburn has not been consistent in the running game. Some plays work better than others, depending on the level of play of the offensive line. But in the recent match, the unit was locked.

“We have some really good running backs, but our O-line really played one of their best games,” Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze said. “We showed a few different things, but at the end of the day, truth be told, it wasn’t like they were extremely sophisticated races.”

Freeze and company moved some players around on the offensive line before the game. Dillon Wade moved to left tackle and Bradyn Joiner made his first start at left guard. Those musical chairs on the offensive line seem to have paid off with a stronger outing.

“Well, you have a small sample size, but based on the sample size we have, you have to say yes,” Freeze said of sticking to that look on the offensive line. “We weren’t perfect and never will be with all the looks and movements you see. We still don’t protect extremely well, and what’s shocking is more of our maximum protection that we don’t protect as well.

Another highlight was the disciplined day of the offensive line.

The Tigers had no penalties on their offensive line against Kentucky. However, the unit allowed four sacks and seven tackles for loss.

“It’s too much,” Freeze said. “We have to get rid of them, but this unit played really solid. I have to say, based on the sample size of one game, that was our best performance.
