‘It’s not about killing:’ Why Pennsylvania rifle hunters are fighting for their lives for just one day

The Monday after Thanksgiving, the opening day of deer rifle season in Pennsylvania for nearly 60 years, was more meaningful than any holiday for the Latini family.

Their hunting camp in Benzenette, Elk County, has hosted four generations and hopefully a fifth will join them soon. The traditions passed down emphasize responsible hunting and respect for nature.

These traditions, they fear, will create a generation of Pennsylvania hunters who will rush into the woods to kill and will not appreciate the sport as a way of life.

“MISFIRE: Divided by Deer Season” is a five-part project that tells the story of the hunters, families, businesses and customs affected by this decision.
