“I look forward to welcoming @elonmusk and @VivekGRamaswamy next week to Capitol Hill to discuss major reform ideas aimed at achieving regulatory repeals, administrative reductions and cost savings – and reviving the principle of limited government !” Johnson wrote. “@realDonaldTrump made this possible!”

Musk and Ramaswamy waste no time laying out their vision for reducing government overload through DOGE. The two men wrote an opinion article published in The Wall Street Journal last week, explaining how the agency outside the government will work to determine suggestions for cuts.

The entrepreneurs have committed to removing entire government agencies as part of the DOGE initiative, which they intend to finalize by July 4, 2026.

In their opinion piece, Musk and Ramaswamy focused largely on how DOGE could help identify waste and regulations that could be eliminated by the executive branch. Now, Johnson’s announcement indicates that the agency will also work closely with Congress.

But DOGE critics have expressed skepticism that it can deliver on ambitious plans for massive cuts to the federal government, citing limits on presidential power, as well as the fact that Republicans’ narrow majorities will mean the GOP will likely need purchase. from some Democrats to pass legislation that would impose budget cuts.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., suggested last week that DOGE might be able to find bipartisan support for its initiatives, signaling an openness to hearing what the agency proposes.

“If they say there needs to be more open competition – not monopolization – in defense contractors and offer recommendations, that’s something that I think could be supported,” Khanna said at CNN. “If they find areas of truly wasteful spending in government, they will get support. But if they start recommending cuts to Social Security, to Medicare, or to Title One education funding, they will will encounter a lot of resistance. So it really depends on what they’re recommending.”
