Scientists develop rapid, portable test for skin cancer

Scientists are developing a wearable sensor that can detect skin cancers caused by chemicals released from the skin.

The team from Bournemouth University (BU) and Dorset University Hospitals launched a three-year study at Poole Hospital in Britain to examine how to create a fast sensor, the use of which would not require specialized training.

A BU spokesperson explained that skin cancer sites are known to release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) – organic chemicals that evaporate easily.

He said: “The study aims to identify VOCs specific to skin cancers and develop a rapid and portable device capable of detecting them. »

Richard Paul, professor of bioanalytical chemistry at the university, who is leading the study, said: “People with suspected skin cancer usually present to their GP, where a doctor is tasked with doing a visual assessment before deciding whether to refer the patient to a medical office. specialized assessment.

“Skin cancers can be difficult to diagnose and, as a result, rates of unnecessary referral to a specialist are high.
