British boxer Sunny Edwards made a shocking and emotional confession to his trainer during his one-sided loss to Galal Yafai.

Edwards, 28, suffered the second and final defeat of his impressive career against Olympic champion Yafai at BP Pulse Live in Birmingham on Saturday night.

Yafai dominated from the start and the referee called off the fight in the sixth round, handing the 31-year-old the interim WBC flyweight belt.

Edwards reigned as IBF flyweight champion between 2021 and 2023, but finished second throughout the fight and announced his retirement following the defeat.

The Sutton-born fighter even made a shocking confession to his coach Chris Williams after the second round, admitting he “didn’t want to be here”.

While receiving instructions from his coach, an emotional Edwards interjected and said, “Do you want me to be real with you?” I don’t even want to be here.

His coach replied, “Don’t be stupid, boy. Look, stop feeling sorry for yourself now.

“Stop feeling sorry for yourself because you had a fucking bad turn. »

Edwards beat Yafai as an amateur in 2015, but suffered an emphatic defeat this time, meaning he finishes his career with 21 wins and two losses.

“Win, lose or draw, I was always riding off into the sunset,” Edwards told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It was the last thing I wanted to do, fight Galal, but I left a few hints in my ‘last dance’ social media posts.

“My body is falling apart, I have problems with my ankles, my wrists, my shoulders, my back, everything is wrong with me. It’s been a difficult career with the wear and tear on my body.

Yafai, who won Olympic gold in 2020, took his unbeaten record to nine victories, seven of which came before the judges’ scorecards.

“It means everything to me,” he told DAZN.

“I think people underestimate me. I won Olympic gold. It was my night tonight.

“Winning gold at the Olympics was the best feat I could ever do, but beating Sunny tonight was a better feeling than standing on that podium.”

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Yafai added: “I had the best camp possible – I was worried about what Sunny might do to me.

“Whatever Sunny decides to do, he’s been the right man for many years now. I’ve looked up to him.

“Sunny is someone I always wanted to beat. I knew I was better. He was a great defender.

Birmingham-born Yafai is now set to face WBC champion Kenshiro Teraji in 2025.
