The Supreme Court on Monday urged Punjab farmers’ leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, currently on a fast unto death at the Khanauri border, to persuade protesting farmers to avoid blocking highways and cause inconvenience to the public.

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan ruled on a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Dallewal, who was evicted from the protest site on November 26 and later released.

“We saw that he was released and he even persuaded another protester to end his fast unto death protest on Saturday,” the court noted, adding that the farmers’ concerns were recognized and are being addressed. under investigation in an ongoing case. as reported by PTI.

While recognizing the democratic right to peaceful protest, the bench stressed the importance of avoiding disruption. Justice Kant suggested that Dallewal encourage protesters to hold peaceful demonstrations, in accordance with the law and in a manner that does not inconvenience the public.

The court clarified that it did not accept Dallewal’s plea at this stage, but gave him liberty to approach the court later if necessary.

Timeline of the protest

Jagjit Singh Dallewal began his fast unto death on November 26, hours after he was abducted by the Punjab police and taken to a hospital in Ludhiana. He was released on November 29 and joined the protest at the Khanauri border.

Farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri border posts since February 13, accusing the Center of failing to respond to their demands, which include:

  • A legal guarantee of the Minimum Support Price (MSP)
  • Implementation of the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission
  • Pension for farmers and farm workers
  • Exemption from agricultural debt
  • Reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013
  • Compensation for families of farmers who died during the 2020-2021 protests

Despite multiple attempts, the Center has not initiated negotiations with the protesters since February 18, according to the farmers.
