Before his dismissal, Erik ten Hag was reportedly frustrated that Man United bosses had failed to sign four star players for the team.

The Dutchman was sacked by the Red Devils coach on Monday, finally ending his two-and-a-half-year tenure, punctuated in his final months by the almost constant threat of his dismissal.

Their position looked untenable ahead of the FA Cup final in May, after a disappointing league campaign which saw them finish eighth in the Premier League.

But their shock 2-1 win over Manchester City spared the former Ajax manager for a few more months. Ten Hag’s safety was only confirmed after Ineos conducted an end-of-season review, during which club chiefs spoke to potential candidates.

It has now emerged, before Ten Hag’s departure, that the Dutchman had expressed his frustration at United’s inability to sign any of his transfer targets.

Reports say United bosses deemed Ten Hag’s transfer demands ‘unrealistic’

According to ESPNTen Hag was frustrated that the club failed to sign Frenkie de Jong, Alexis Mac Allister, Federico Valverde and Harry Kane.

The report further claims that United executives deemed its demands “unrealistic.”

Since Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford, rumors of a possible move for Barcelona star De Jong have been rife, but the move never materialized.

Meanwhile, United’s interest in Harry Kane was well known, but they instead opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund while the England captain joined Bayern Munich.

In April last year, rumors suggested United were keen to sign then Brighton star Mac Allister but, instead, the midfielder moved to Liverpool.

While Valverde has remained firmly at Madrid, probably due to his high salary and the immense transfer fee it would take to lure him away from the Bernabeu.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag was reportedly considering leaving United this summer amid criticism of his performance and speculation the club was in talks with managers.

United’s interest in Frenkie de Jong has been around for a long time since Ten Hag arrived at United.

According to Dutch store De TelegraafReports from those meetings, as well as heavy criticism of his performance as United boss, led the 54-year-old to consider quitting.

They report that Ten Hag only decided to stay during a long summit in Ibiza, where he had gone on vacation.

Ten Hag has agreed a one-year contract extension with the club following clear negotiations in the summer. This agreement would have allowed him to remain at the helm until 2026.

Ten Hag has lifted the lid on his discussions with United and revealed the club turned up at his door to confirm they wanted him to stay.
