Lake City leaders discuss the pros and cons of a four-day work week

LAKE CITY, Fla. (WCJB) – A four-day work week is being offered to municipal employees in Lake City.

A presentation from Lake City’s human resources director compares the pros and cons of a four-day work week for city staff.

One option allows staff to work four days, but municipal services are open for five days.

This means that employees will receive an additional day off, but municipal services will remain open.

Some people would work Monday to Thursday and others Tuesday to Friday.

The second option also closes services on Friday.

In both scenarios, city hours would be extended by one hour in the morning and one hour in the evening…

“As far as administration is concerned, I am sold Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. I think it would be a very good thing for, as I said, the ground workers. It would be a benefit to them, but I wish, like Councilman Carter said, they would give them an option,” said council member Chevella Young.

City leaders said this would give staff the day off to schedule appointments or spend time with family.

It could also affect parents who have to pick up their children from school and have to work an extra hour.

Adding that they would prefer a six-month trial period rather than a year.

Some residents oppose the four-day work week because they feel it means they will have less time to get the services they need.
