Stephan Lewis signs new deal with Quins after considering retirement

Ancient Harlequins captain Stéphane Lewis became the latest player to sign a contract extension at the club.

The 32-year-old will extend his stay at the Stoop for at least a seventh season, although Quins have not revealed the length of his new contract.

The South African joined Quins in 2019 and was named captain a season later, guiding them to the Prime Minister Gallagher in his first season at the helm.

After five years as captain, Lewis resigned from the position over the summer and was replaced by Alex Dombrandt. However, he found himself captain of the team again this season following an injury to the number 8’s hand.

Lewis admitted he considered retiring last season due to a series of injuries.

“I’m excited to extend my stay at the club and continue to have the opportunity to wear the Quarters,” Lewis said.

“It was a dream come true when I first signed for Harlequins and to continue this journey makes me and my family very happy.

“Last season, I got to a point where I was about to hang up my boots after suffering multiple injuries, and I didn’t feel like I was playing to the standards I hold myself to. But I worked hard, had a good pre-season and I’m enjoying my rugby this year.

“I am grateful to Quins for the opportunity to continue to contribute to the club on and off the field.”

Quins head coach Danny Wilson added: “Steph is an important character in our team. He is the dominant lineout operator leading this area in our group, and this clarity at the set piece provides the platform to play our style of rugby.

“He is also a key member of our leadership group having captained Harlequins for several seasons. Having a pool of strong leaders, who have enjoyed success with the club, will only benefit the team as we integrate younger players into the senior team.

“We are all delighted that Steph has committed her future to Harlequins.”
