Local nonprofits discuss what they need for Giving Tuesday

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – It’s Giving Tuesday, and WDBJ7 checked in with local nonprofits to find out what they need this holiday season.

United Way of Roanoke Valley, Angels of Assisi, the Hope Center and the National Center for Healthy Veterans all have a common need for monetary and volunteer donations.

The Hope Center is a local nonprofit based in northwest Roanoke that is gearing up for its upcoming annual Christmas party. Executive Director Darlene Lewis said they are in need of monetary donations and volunteers to help give a child in need a Christmas to remember.

“Our biggest donation we need right now is funding. Because, like I say, if we can’t keep the doors open, we can’t be there for the community,” Lewis said.

Angels of Assisi is a non-profit organization that provides resources to animals and their owners. Director Lisa O’Neill said they still need financial donations to help cover medical needs and more foster families to keep these animals healthy while they recover.

“We can also always use things like canned food, wet canned dog and cat food. We can always use old towels and blankets. So all of those things, every little ounce helps,” O’Neill said.

The United Way of Roanoke Valley needs donations to secure funding for its child care scholarships to ensure people can get to work and provide for their families.

“When families don’t have quality childcare or no childcare at all, we can’t work. And so this is obviously an obstacle to financial stability. So we are asking for community support to help us in our early childhood education work by donating to the United Way,” said Kianna Price Marshall, vice president of advancement for United Way of Roanoke Valley .

The National Center for Healthy Veterans provides mental, physical and emotional resources to veterans. General President Bob Dees is asking for donations to help rebuild their farm which burned down last month. He said they had managed to gather hundreds of volunteers, but there was still work to be done.

“We need financial contributions. And so, we thank people in advance on Giving Tuesday for that. And no matter how big or small, we need it. Second, the community has been very helpful with gifts and kindness,” General Dees said.

These organizations said that even though they give on Tuesday, they still accept donations and resources throughout the year.
