Hispanic Democrats want Biden to protect immigrants from Trump

A trio of Democratic senators urge the president Joe Biden has “Trump-proof” some of his migration policies before leaving office in January 2025.

Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), Alex Padilla (D-CA) and Ben Ray Lujan (D-NM) sent a letter to Biden on Wednesday urging him to extend protections to “long-term immigrant communities » before his White House exit.

“In addition to supporting enhanced border security, we look forward to ensuring that (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients, (Temporary Protected Status) holders, and other immigrants who are essential members of our communities and our economies are not forgotten during this busy time. », the trio wrote.

President-elect Donald Trump has campaigned heavily in favor of carrying out large-scale evictions if elected, and comfortably won the 2024 election against Vice President Kamala Harris last month.

The trio of senators nonetheless urge Biden to take further steps to prevent evictions. Two of them are from states Harris won, while the third, Cortez Masto, is from Nevada, where Trump won but Republican Senate candidate Sam Brown lost to Sen. Jacky Rosen ( D-NV).

The senators urge Biden to expand TPS to immigrants from countries including Ecuador, Nicaragua and El Salvador, writing that “nationals of these three countries cannot return home due to serious circumstances on the ground.”

Conservatives, notably Vice President-elect JD Vance, have argued that Biden abuses TPS to grant a veneer of legitimacy to otherwise illegal immigration, claiming the president used the process to allow the entry of hundreds of thousands of migrants.

The senators also urged Biden to protect DACA recipients by quickly processing renewals and early parole requests before leaving office on January 20, 2025.
