Alamo Ranch neighbors create petition to add four-way stop sign

BEXAR COUNTY, TX – A backup is a way of describing what happens outside of Briscoe Middle School on Lone Star Parkway during pick-up time.

Manny Cuevas said it was more than just a backup.

“We have a lot of reckless, aggressive and distracted drivers,” said Cuevas, a crossing guard at the school. “A lot of these parents just don’t want to stop. »

More than 250 people have signed an online petition calling on Bexar County to add a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Lone Star Parkway and Wise Trail. Without a solution, neighbors say their safety is at stake.

“It terrifies me that we’re going to end up with children who are going to be seriously injured,” said resident Kristen Hess. Stop signs, Hess said, could “provide safer passage for children.” This will also allow our residents to be able to enter and exit their own area safely.

Over the past two years, Hess said reports of drivers double parking in the middle of Lone Star Parkway, blocking the front gate of The Preserve at Alamo Ranch neighborhood and speeding through the school zone were all repeated problems during pickup.

“This is a must-pass for people trying to get to (State) Highway 151, Loop 1604 and Culebra (Road),” Hess said. “I don’t want middle school students to feel unsafe in our neighborhood.”

Ryan Haskins, president of The Preserve at Alamo Ranch HOA, said the traffic problem has become so troublesome that his board has hired security during school hours to prevent Briscoe families from using their gate as means of circumvention.

“They treat it like a highway,” Haskins said. “If you’re going to build 30,000 homes, build schools to accommodate all those families moving in. There is only limited parking and space on the street for them to queue safely. »

A Northside ISD spokesperson said school officials were notified of vehicles parking and stopping on Lone Star Parkway. The school principal also sent a message to families reminding them to “do not stop in an active lane” during pickup.

The school has Cuevas as a crossing guard at the intersection. There is also flashing overhead school zone signage in front of the school.

However, public roads are the responsibility of the municipality. A Bexar County spokesperson said a traffic study is underway at that intersection.

Here are the details of this study that have been published so far on KSAT:

  • The study was contracted to one of the county’s traffic engineering consultants in November.

  • The study focuses on whether the intersection “warrants” a full stop under state and federal guidelines.

  • No timeline has been determined for the study to be completed, but the county said it typically takes between four and six months.

  • Once the study is completed, the county will review the recommendations and determine an appropriate approach to current funding.
