Max’s password-sharing crackdown is about to begin, and here’s what to expect

We’ve known for months that Warner Bros. Discovery plans to follow in Netflix’s footsteps by tackling password sharing for its users. Max. streaming service. The move certainly worked out well for Netflix, which added millions of subscribers when it began enforcing its password-sharing ban last year. Other streamers watched from the sidelines as they mulled similar measures.

Disney confirmed in April its intention to crack down on Disney+ password sharing. Then the company started implementing the new policies just a few weeks ago. Now it looks like Max is next in line.

The first report detailing Max’s potential plan to stop password sharing arrived in early March, weeks before Bob Iger detailed Disney’s timeline for his own plan. The report said Max would launch into new markets first, with the expansion plan expected to last around 18 months. The crackdown on password sharing would then begin at the end of 2024 and would take place throughout 2025.

A few weeks ago, during the company’s most recent earnings conference call, Warner Bros. Chief Financial Officer Gunnar Wiedenfels said. Discovery, confirmed that crackdown on password sharing Max will begin with “very sweet messages” this year. Max will then apply more pressure on password sharers with additional measures.

Fast forward to the beginning of December and Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that the password sharing ban is coming. According to Deadlineanother executive mentioned the company’s plans this time around.

JB Perrette, Warner CEO and president of Global Streaming and Games, said at the Wells Fargo TMT Summit in Rancho Palos Verde that some Max subscribers will soon see “very early and gentle messages” about sharing passwords during next week.

“It’s an art and a science to try to tighten the filter to figure out who’s in there. We will start sending messages to certain people who we think are in the highest usage tier,” Perrette said. “We will come up with a way to basically add a member, starting in the first quarter. We will then start incrementally as we get the data and begin to determine, with some explicit and implicit signals, our ability to detect. And then as we go through 25, you’ll see the filters get tighter and tighter.

From the looks of it, you don’t need to worry about getting your Max affairs in order until the first quarter of 2025 at the earliest. If you share a lot of passwords, you might soon receive “soft messaging” from Max, but you won’t have to do anything for now.

However, it appears that Max will eventually implement the same measures as Netflix and Disney Plus. We’re probably looking at household checks for Max password sharing. Users will have the option to add at least one paying member to the account. This is similar to what you can do with Netflix and Disney Plus to continue sharing access to the same account.

Coincidentally, Netflix has recently been more aggressive in enforcing its ban on password sharing.. It started shortly after Disney began sending out its household checks. There must be something in the air.
