Michigan suspends Livonia car dealership’s license for allegedly selling used cars as new

WAYNE COUNTY, Michigan. – A Michigan dealership has had its license suspended by the state for allegedly selling used and new cars.

LaFontaine Motors of Livonia Inc., also known as LaFontaine Hyundai of Livonia, has had its license suspended for several alleged violations of the Michigan Vehicle Code. The alleged violations included falsifying documents so they could rent used vehicles as new.

The Michigan Department of State (MDOS) reported the following alleged violations:

  • Falsely mentioning that a customer has not taken delivery of a vehicle to rent it as new to another customer

  • Falsely certifying a vehicle as new on an MDOS application for title and registration

  • Return a used vehicle new

  • Not having a title immediately with the odometer information correctly filled in

  • Failing to Complete the MDOS Application for Title and Registration

  • Failing to properly issue a temporary registration

  • Failing to apply for title and registration in a buyer’s name within 21 days of vehicle delivery

In MDOS’ investigation, regulatory staff learned that LaFontaine’s corporate office allegedly suggested submitting false information even after MDOS and the Michigan Automobile Dealers Association issued memos reiterating what makes a vehicle “used” under the Michigan Vehicle Code.

MDOS is reviewing the case for possible referral to the state attorney general.
