NBA confirms officials missed calls regarding Tyrese Maxey’s foul attempt and final shot

THE 76ers were right to be frustrated by two non-calls against Tyrese Maxey that could have changed Wednesday’s outcome 106-102 defeat against the Orlando Magic at the Wells Fargo Center.

During a stoppage in action with 14.5 seconds remaining, Maxey told an official he was going to foul Magic forward Franz Wagner once play resumed.

The NBA’s final two minutes report determined that the All-Star point guard reached with both hands at Wagner in an attempt to foul at 14.0 seconds. The report also determined that Orlando’s Anthony Black reached and initiated illegal contact with Maxey’s arm before the start of his upward shooting motion, with 7.3 seconds remaining. A non-shooting foul should have been assessed on this play, the NBA confirmed.

As a result, the report stated that officials made incorrect non-calls on both plays.

The first non-call came with the Sixers trailing, 101-100. When no foul was called, Maxey sprinted across the zone to foul after 5.1 seconds.

The second non-call came with the Sixers down three points. Thinking he had committed a foul, Maxey threw the ball and missed on a three-pointer. Wagner grabbed the rebound, was fouled and made two free throws to extend Orlando’s lead to five points with 3.1 seconds remaining.

“Yeah, I mean, look, he broke through there,” Sixers coach Nick Nurse said after the game of the latest no-call. “I crossed the gap a little bit and the secondary defender (Black) hit him in the arm. And that’s what the video shows: It should have been three free throws. That would have been a great piece, right? »

Even if he would not have received the foul shots, the Sixers would have had another opportunity to tie the score.
