WH Smith to discuss ‘preserving’ historic store fittings as he confirms ‘disappointing’ closure

The retailer has been based in the same premises on Newtown’s High Street since 1927.

The store also spans part of a unit inside the Bear Lanes shopping center.

But after nearly a century in the city, company executives have confirmed the closure, which they say will take place “early next year.”

A spokesperson for WH Smith said the decision was “regrettable” but it was “no longer viable” to run the store.

The store is particularly unique because it retains the company’s original equipment – and was the only one not renovated by the company in the 1970s, with the aim of serving as a living museum, to show what stores looked like before.

The store also has an upstairs museum detailing the company’s history and numerous exhibits.

Confirming its decision regarding the store’s future, WH Smith spokesperson said it would hold discussions with the building’s owners about how it could “support” the preservation of the historic fixtures and fittings.

He said: “WH Smith in Newtown will close its doors early next year. We are disappointed to lose our presence in Newtown, but unfortunately it is no longer sustainable to continue to trade from this location.

“We would like to thank all of our customers for their support and for shopping with us.

“As part of the closure process, we will also discuss how we can support the preservation of historic facilities and equipment with the responsible owners of the building for future generations to enjoy.”

Community group Open Newtown, which revealed the news last week, called on the company to reconsider its decision.

He also urged the public to consider using the store rather than buying online.

Writing on social media, the band said: “Yesterday we heard the incredibly sad news that WH Smith Newtown is set to close in the new year.

“Today we have written to the CEO and Chairman of WH Smith, imploring them to reconsider this decision and consider at least a short-term lease.

“This heritage property is a living museumrestored in the 1970s to reflect its appearance when it opened in 1927.

“It’s unique. Before you buy your next book online or in a large supermarket, consider using this store, making at least a good use of the clearance offer and giving decision makers good reasons to reconsider their decision.”
