Updated Rivian software to enable launch mode and easier wheel swaps

  • Rivian owners won’t need a visit to a service center to change tires and wheels
  • Rivians Gen 1 will take control of the launch
  • The framework for third-party applications is complete

Rivian provides regular live updates and listens to customer feedback to define what it prioritizes, whether that’s the good, the bad or the ugly.

During a fireside chat at the automaker’s Venice Space in California in November, software director Wassym Bensaid presented a a multitude of features and software tweaks which are in preparation. All are driven by owner feedback.

Rivian interface will allow user-configurable tire sizes

During the first three years of production of the Rivian R1T and R1S, 20-, 21-, and 22-inch wheels were offered with off-road all-terrain tires and road-oriented all-season tires. The updated 2025 models, known as Gen 2, reduce that to just 20- and 22-inch wheel offerings, still with all-terrain or all-season off-road rubber. But adventure-ready vehicles are ready to be customized as seasons or adventures change.

Changing wheels and tires from 22-inch wheels to 20-inch wheels with winter or all-terrain tires currently requires owners to visit a Rivian service center to have the vehicle’s infotainment system reprogrammed to recognize different wheel and tire sizes. This will then be taken into account in the estimation of the autonomy of the on-board computer.

The ability for users to manually change vehicle wheel and tire sizes will be available in a future software update. first quarter 2025according to Bensaïd.

Launch Control for Rivians Gen 1

It happens, Bensaid confirmed.

Currently the launch control feature for pre-2025 R1T and R1S The models are under development and will arrive during the 2025 calendar year.

Bensaid didn’t want to reveal much about the system, but said, “We want it to be a really exciting package.”

“There will be surprises,” Bensaid noted. He went on to say that owners have been asking for certain features for a long time and they are coming, but the executive would not elaborate on what those features are.

Loading and data transparency

Bensaid also confirmed the deployment of what is called Energy 2.0 application. The goal is to bring transparency and data insights to customers so they understand pricing curves. The goal is to help educate customers on what to expect from a charging standpoint, what to expect from a range standpoint, and even promote sustainable behavior.

Opening Rivian infotainment to third-party apps

Bensaid said the ultimate vision is for Rivian to open its infotainment platform to third-party developers. This would allow companies that make apps like Gaia GPS or onX off-road map apps to work on their adventures in the boonies. Bensaid was quick to point out that he couldn’t provide any timetable for any of this given everything that’s happening from a priority standpoint, but the the frame is in place.

Updated gauge cluster design

The software chief also confirmed that Rivians will receive a new digital gauge cluster design in 2025.
