Consumer confidence hits seven-month high in December

Consumer confidence rose for the fifth straight month in December as they feel more excited about the economy during the holiday season, even as inflation expectations rise.

The University of Michigan’s consumer confidence index reached 74 in December, according to preliminary results released Friday. This is higher than the expectations of economists who expected a figure of 73, and higher than the figure of 71.8 in November.

That’s the index’s highest reading in seven months, said Joanne Hsu, director of consumer surveys at the University of Michigan.
