Superstitions ‘stop’ Brits from buying black cats and dogs, study finds

More than one in ten Britons refuse to buy a black cat or dog out of superstition.

A survey of 2,000 adults found that 12% believe pets of this color bring bad luck and would actively choose to avoid adopting one.

The study, commissioned by Lottoland in partnership with the Blue Cross, found that a quarter of adults are “very” or “somewhat” superstitious. And according to additional data from the charity Blue Cross, black cats and dogs take longer to be adopted than other animals, potentially because of these national superstitions.

A Lottoland representative said: “Superstitions have been part of human culture for centuries, passed down from generation to generation. At their core, they often come from a need to make sense of the unknown and seeking to take control of situations where we might feel helpless. »

It appears superstition is not uncommon among Brits, with a third fearing breaking a mirror and 14% never spilling salt without throwing some over their shoulder afterwards.

Nearly a third of those who follow superstitions have passed on one of their behaviors to a family member or friend.

Mary Haisman, head of corporate partnerships, community and events at Blue Cross, added: “There is no reason to let outdated superstitions stop you from welcoming a black dog or cat into your home. »

She added: “Black animals are just as loving, loyal and deserving of a home as any other animal, and it is unfortunate that these superstitions can sometimes prevent them from finding a family.

“For example, it takes us five extra days and £50 more on average to find new loving homes for black cats, compared to others in our care.

“This is Pablo, who I adopted from our Devon Blue Cross site. He was a long term pet, in our foster family for over five months, unfortunately unable to find his forever home .

“The average length of time black dogs and cats stay in our care is generally longer. He’s the sweetest boy, I’m really surprised he wasn’t rehomed sooner.

“While we can’t know for sure, the suspicions were that it took so long because he’s a black dog, but honestly I can’t think of any other reason. He has the sweetest temperament, gives our family has endless love and is such an important part of my life.”
