Another big race absentee for Aidan O’Brien as Ylang Ylang scratched from Breeders’ Cup by vets

Ylang-Ylang has become the latest high-profile contender for Aidan O’Brien to be ruled out of a major international target after the three-year-old was scratched from the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf by vets.

Frankel’s daughter failed a PET scan at Del Mar before Saturday’s freshman year (10:25 a.m.) just a day after O’Brien’s favorite for the Melbourne Cup, Jan Brueghel, was withdrawn from the race by Racing Victoria stewards.

Ylang Ylang disappointed on his last visit, failing to beat his rival in the Prix de l’Opéra won by Friendly Soul at Longchamp earlier this month.

She has not won in five starts since winning the Group 1 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket in October last year and earned a break from O’Brien after finishing only sixth when she was kicked out of the 11-8 favorite for the Oaks in May.

Ylang Ylang, who began her season by finishing fifth in the 1,000 Guineas, beat just one of her seven rivals in the Group 3 Desmond Stakes after the 69-day hiatus before finishing fourth in the Matron Stakes before her Paris disappointment .

O’Brien, who called local stewards “ridiculous” in Victoria’s decision to exclude St Leger hero Jan Brueghel from the Melbourne Cup, could still be represented by Yorkshire Oaks heroine Content in the Filly & Mare Turf.
