Women’s FA Cup: London City Lionesses outclass Gwalia United 4-0 in third round

Second Division side London City Lionesses have defeated a hard-working Third Division side Gwalia United to secure a place in the fourth round of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup.

The hosts were ahead after 25 minutes, when FA Women’s Championship top scorer Isobel Goodwin scored her eighth goal of the season as she headed home from a corner.

Gwalia tried to withstand the pressure from the Lionesses but it was too much as former Everton and Aston Villa striker Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah doubled the lead in the 40th minute with an incredible curling effort from the outside the surface.

Goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan-Jones kept Gwalia in the game until Lionesses’ Chinese midfielder Shen Mengyu scored the first goal of the second half 10 minutes from time.

In the 90th minute, the Lionesses put the final nail in the coffin when Serbian striker Miljana Ivanovic’s shot found the back of the net.

The visitors were successful at times against the home side, but their international quality players were too much for the Welsh side.

The Lionesses can now look forward to the fourth round draw when all 12 Women’s Super League teams are presented, with potential opponents including Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal.
