Bournemouth claim thrilling late victory at Ipswich

An inspired display from substitute Dango Ouattara earned AFC Bournemouth a huge 2-1 victory over Ipswich Town, who remain winless in the Premier League at Portman Road this season.

Ouattara scored the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage time in the second half, after setting up Enes Unal, who also came on, for the equalizer eight minutes earlier.

The home side took the lead in the first half thanks to a superb finish from Conor Chaplin after good work from defender Cameron Burgess, before Unal headed home with the help of the outstretched foot of Burgess.

But the Cherries sealed the victory late on after David Brooks saw his effort saved by Arijanet Muric, only for the rebound to fall over for Ouattara to head home.

The victory places Bournemouth eighth in the table, while Ipswich remain 18th, four points behind Crystal Palace.

How the match went

Bournemouth got off to an encouraging start and almost took the lead early on, but Marcus Tavernier failed to convert Milos Kerkez’s fizzing cross from close range.

Ipswich overcame their shaky start and took the lead through Chaplin, who slotted home Burgess’ delivery.

The hosts almost doubled their advantage seven minutes later, but Kepa Arrizabalaga made an excellent save to push away Jack Taylor’s deflected effort.

Tavernier then hit a post at the other end before Sam Szmodics’ corner was turned into his own net by Lewis Cook, but the goal was disallowed after a foul on Kepa, with Michael Salisbury’s on-field decision being confirmed by VAR.

The Cherries improved after the break, with Cook’s effort from distance just past a post, but Ipswich were a threat on the counter-attack, Szmodics forcing another save from Kepa after being slipped by Liam Delap.

The Tractor Boys were on course for their first home win of the season until Ouattara beat the onrushing Muric and crossed for Unal to equalise, before the Burkinabe striker delivered the decisive blow deep into injury time.

McKenna’s men hit hard by late goals

After the disappointment of losing at home to Crystal Palace in midweek, Kieran McKenna will also be unhappy with a result which leaves them four points behind Palace in 17th.

After coming through a tricky opening, Ipswich were in the lead at several points in the first half, making their pressure count with a well-worked Chaplin goal and having further chances to double their lead.

But the second half was a much different affair, with Bournemouth possessing much of the ball, forcing McKenna’s side to remain compact and well-organized out of possession while trying to hit them on the break, by the intermediary of Omari Hutchinson and the implacable Délap.

Unfortunately they couldn’t hold on, although Burgess showed his quality on both ends for his team, setting up Chaplin for the goal, followed by a magnificent last chance challenge to deny Justin Kluivert before blocking superbly Antoine Semenyo’s cross when Bournemouth had a goal. three against two in the last 10 minutes.

Ipswich will look to bounce back from that defeat when they travel to face their relegation-troubled compatriots Wolverhampton Wanderers next Saturday.

Super star of subs for Cherrys

Andoni Iraola’s side played brilliantly to beat Tottenham Hotspur in midweek, confirming that triumph with their late victory on Sunday, despite trailing for most of the match.

Just like midweek, Bournemouth were guilty of wasting numerous chances, mainly in the first half, thanks to Semenyo and Tavernier.

Ryan Christie tested Muric with a low effort that weaved its way through a crowd of bodies, but they eventually made their pressure count in the closing stages, aided by the introductions of Unal and Ouattara.

After keeping Ipswich in their own half for much of the second half, Bournemouth moved on late to turn their sustained possession into meaningful chances, rewarded by two well-executed efforts which capped some good build-up play.

The Cherries will be hoping to secure a fourth successive league victory when they host West Ham United a week on Monday.
