Stolen vehicle found and 2 people arrested using license plate reading technology in Caledon

Two people were charged and a stolen vehicle was recovered with the help of a license plate technician in Caledon, police say.

The arrests took place Monday as Ontario Provincial Police said officers were patrolling Kennedy Road in the Southfields Village area of Caledon.

Police say they were detected by the police car’s Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) system, also known as a license plate reader or scanner.

The system alerted officers to a stolen vehicle which was later found at a residence on Valleyscape Trail.

Two suspects aged 27 and one aged 31 were arrested. Police say they searched the home later that day and found an automobile master key during the search.

OPP say the investigation led to charges against Samardeep Brar, 27, of no fixed address, and Navreen Dhaliwal, 31, of Brant County. Both were charged with possession of an automobile master key and possession of property obtained by crime worth more than $5,000. Brar was also charged with two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

The accused were held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville, according to police.

License plate readers are a relatively new tool for Ontario law enforcement agencies and have helped officers seize over 11 pounds of cannabis in Bramptonand catch a Brampton resident driving without a license.

The City of Brampton is pushing to integrate more APLR technology into its speed camera and traffic system, including 360-degree video cameras.
