A team of IIT-M experts inspects Sengulam lake in Kovai

Coimbatore: A team of experts from IIT-Madras on Monday inspected Sengulam Lake in the city, to examine the water infiltration problem in the body of water. Homes located near the lake are prone to flooding during heavy rains.
Sengulam Lake, with a capacity of 3.18 million cubic feet (mcft), is located in Kulathupalayam, a suburban area of Coimbatore. Districts 87 and 88 are flooded due to excess water in the lake during rains. Additionally, water seepage from the ground often occurs even when it is not raining.
Babu P, councilor of ward 87, said, “Houses continue to get flooded whenever it rains, affecting around 200 families in the surrounding area. drainage installation has controlled the flooding, there is no permanent solution yet. » He added that since the reservoir is filled with clay soil, it is not possible to stop water seepage. He, however, welcomed the company’s decision to seek expert advice to resolve the issue.
Meanwhile, a company official said the expert team would soon file a report based on its observations and later provide suggestions to resolve the issue.
Corporation Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran accompanied the team during the inspection.
