Alisson Becker has been told he has a tough act to follow as he prepares to replace Caoimhin Kelleher in the Liverpool goal. Alisson is set to make his first appearance in more than two months after returning to the Reds squad for their Champions League clash against Girona here in Spain on Tuesday evening.

The Brazilian has been missing since tearing his hamstring during the final stage of the 1-0. Premier League win at Crystal Palace in early October.

In his absence, deputy Kelleher put in a series of impressive performances to help Liverpool top the Premier League and Champions League tables, although he was responsible for Newcastle United’s late equalizer in the match drew 3-3 against Tyneside last Wednesday.

And Slot admits it won’t be easy for Alisson – who has missed the last 11 games – to improve on the contribution of Kelleher, who has kept three successive Champions League clean sheets.

“Alisson is fit, yes,” Slot said. “I think it speaks for itself if you can go up against Alisson, who has been so exceptional for this club for so many years and for the Brazil national team. It’s really nice to have him back and have available.

“But if you look at how his replacement performed, it won’t be easy to do better. We expect it to be the same or with slightly better margins.

“But Caoimh has also done so well that we can say that we have two very good goalkeepers. For so many years Alisson has been so exceptional for this club that we expect and hope that he will do the same in the weeks and weeks months to come.

While Alisson is back, Diogo Jota did not travel to Girona despite being present at the open training on Monday at Kirkby. Federico Chiesa and Tyler Morton also remained on Merseyside due to illness and a minor knock respectively, with defenders Ibrahima Konate, Conor Bradley and Kostas Tsimikas also missing. Alexis Mac Allister is serving a one-match European ban.

Liverpool took just a 19-man squad to Spain, which also includes third-choice goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros, 20-year-old midfielder James McConnell and Academy left-back James Norris.

With the Goodison derby against Everton canceled Saturday due to bad weather weather reportthe Reds haven’t been in action for almost a week and Slot suggested he had no choice but to be strong with his starting lineup.

“Everyone (available) is really fit because we didn’t play Saturday’s game,” he said. “Now there is no reason to rotate from the last game. Maybe there is a reason for the next game (against Fulham at home on Saturday in the Premier League) but there are three days between that – there we will start like all the other matches with a very good team.
