Father arrested after fight at Del Norte High School

A fight between two Del Norte High School students in a girl’s bathroom Monday ended with the arrest of an adult, Maclovio Joseph Salazar.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A fight between two Del Norte High School students in a girls’ bathroom ended Monday with the arrest of an adult, Maclovio Joseph Salazar.

On Tuesday, KOB 4 spoke to Maclovio’s wife about what happened.

“I get a phone call from my daughter saying it’s my other daughter, because I have three daughters that go to Del Norte High School. I got a phone call saying my daughter was fighting, and my daughter told me, ‘It wasn’t just a normal fight,'” said Dianna Salazar, wife of Maclovio Joseph Salazar.

Dianna says the other student involved in the fight and one of her daughters have been in trouble before. She says the bathroom fight started when the other student checked her daughter’s shoulder that day.

“Actually, my daughter had coffee thrown at her, that’s how this whole incident started. I guess earlier today the other student checked my kid’s shoulder I guess. From what I understand they ended up meeting, I guess my daughter was in the bathroom later that day around fifth period, and the other student walks in with I guess their two cousins or something,” Dianna said.

Albuquerque Public Schools police responded to the fight in the bathroom, but things didn’t end there.

“We are at home. We get a phone call from my other daughter saying her dad is fighting and they are jumping on him. And I’m like, what’s going on? said Diane.

According to the criminal complaint, there is parking lot surveillance video of another fight on school grounds. This time, police say Maclovio Salazar is seen on video waiting for the other student and his parent in the parking lot before punching him.

Another fight breaks out between the adults, then the students get involved again.

KOB 4 asked Dianna if her husband hit a student, and she says she was caught in the middle trying to drive to school, and she’s still trying to figure this out herself which exactly happened.

We have contacted APS regarding the situation. A spokesperson said the fighting forced a brief shelter in place while authorities responded, and APS Police are currently investigating.

Dianna says two of her children suffered concussions from the fights and were suspended from school.

Maclovio faces child abuse charges. On Tuesday, a judge released him under certain conditions. He is expected to return to court early next year.

We also tried to contact the other family, but were unable to do so on Tuesday.
