Casagrande: The real question after Kalen DeBoer’s first season at Alabama

This is an opinion column.

A question lingered in this little sportswriter’s brain from the moment Kalen DeBoer stepped off the plane Jan. 12 in Tuscaloosa.

Simple, but important.

How is success defined when it comes to replacing the best of all time?

What would be considered good in first year?

It was both quantifiable and somewhere in the abstract. There are a significant number of victories and defeats and the general atmosphere of the program – an atmosphere assessment as the young people would say.

As we sit almost 11 months to the day later, it is only right to take stock and perhaps even answer these questions.

This means recognizing the unique circumstances that have surrounded all of college football. The SEC was a different place both in terms of numbers and schedule this fall, so apples-to-apples comparisons to previous times don’t always add up.

That said, 9-3 was well within the range of our preseason expectations. That or 10-2 seemed reasonable considering the talent lost, talent retained, and talent added for a defending SEC champion in the midst of a monumental internal restructuring.
