The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday asked its election bodies in Delhi to ensure revision and updating of electoral rolls, as per statutory provisions, with the participation of political parties, sources said.

The commission stressed the need to strictly adhere to its instructions while updating the electoral roll in Delhi, where elections are scheduled to be held early next year.

The sources said the poll panel told Delhi officials that representatives of political parties should be involved in the process of revising electoral rolls with “utmost transparency and disclosure”.

He said all complaints and grievances of political parties should be resolved promptly and factually.

The Delhi Chief Electoral Officer and other concerned officials have also been informed that the lists of complaints and objections must be shared with political parties every week and published on the websites of the CEO and district election officers.

Additionally, no suppression is permitted without conducting ground verification and providing voters with notice ensuring they have an opportunity to be heard, the EC told the CEO and its officials.

The officials were directed to look into the issues raised by political parties regarding the revision of electoral rolls and submit factual details for further consideration by the commission.

This comes as a delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) met the election authority on Wednesday to urge it to stop any deletion of voters’ names from the electoral rolls ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.

The term of the Delhi Assembly ends on February 23 and elections are likely to be held in February itself.
