A woman who found a giant 5kg mushroom during a countryside walk said the vegetable fed her family for an entire week.

Alissimon Minnitt, 27, was walking with his father in a field in North Marston, near Winslow in Buckinghamshire, when they spotted huge mushrooms in the grass.

“It fed my family for a week…I’ve been eating it ever since. I still have three slices left in my freezer. I’ll be honest, I’m a little sick of it,” she said.

The musician is an avid mushroom finder and “interest in mushrooms”, and said she knows how to identify them and not mistake them for something poisonous.

Ms Minnitt, from Chesham, found the mushrooms near where she had previously found another giant, but slightly smaller, mushroom in 2017.

“A giant ball is the most easily recognizable ‘forage’ mushroom,” she said. “It looks like something from another planet, they’re so weird.” »

The amateur mycologist explained that she knows which shapes and colors to avoid. Experts say people without this knowledge should not take any risks.

Mushrooms have been used to cook mushroom meatloaf and steaks, as well as a mushroom-based pizza.

“My mom found a recipe on TikTok,” Ms Minnitt added. “We used the mushroom as a base for the pizza. It was nice.”

The rest was sliced, boxed and frozen for later use.

In September, three people in Jersey were poisoned after mistaking a deadly mushroom for an edible mushroom.

Mycologist Charlotte Shenkin warned people not to eat wild mushrooms they couldn’t identify with certainty.

She said: “It is essential to be aware of the real and potentially life-threatening risks of eating wild mushrooms without knowledge and caution.”

Ms Shenkin also advised pickers to seek a second opinion and keep an uncooked sample in case they become ill.
