Kenya Railways issues SGR passenger advisory on Nairobi-Mombasa route: “stopover”

  • Kenya Railways said the train from Nairobi would stop at Voi between 2:05 a.m. and 2:08 a.m., and that from Mombasa to Nairobi would stop between 11:45 p.m. and 11:48 p.m.
  • The agency noted that the stops will be effective on Sunday, December 15, giving passengers wishing to connect their rail journey to Mombasa or Nairobi a reason to smile.

Kenya Railways has announced the resumption of the Madaraka Express stopover at Voi Station, giving a reason to smile to passengers wishing to connect their train journey to Mombasa or Nairobi.

When will Madaraka Express make stopovers?

In a notice on Friday, December 13, the agency said the train from Nairobi would stop between 2:05 a.m. and 2:08 a.m., and that from Mombasa to Nairobi would stop between 11:45 p.m. and 11:48 p.m.

Kenya Railways said the stopovers would be effective on Sunday, December 15.

“Kenya Railways is pleased to announce that from December 15, the 10-hour Madaraka Express passenger train to and from Nairobi terminus will now make a three-minute stopover at the Voi station,” Kenya Railways posted on its X handle.

What is the SGR?

THE Standard gauge railway (SGR) is the flagship project of the Kenyan government under the Vision 2030 development program.

This is the the largest infrastructure project since the country gained independence in 1963. The project aims to simplify transport operations between Nairobi and Mombasa. Nine stations line the route.

Plans are underway to expand the project to other East African cities.

Will the SGR be extended to Uganda?

On Sunday, December 8, President William Ruto announced its intention to extend the SGR from Naivasha to UgandaRwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The extension of the SGR aims to strengthen regional trade, improve cross-border transport and foster economic integration in East Africa.

Speaking at East African Community (EAC) in Mombasa, Ruto highlighted the importance of infrastructure for regional connectivity and integration.

Extension of SGR to Kisumu

In January 2024, Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o welcomed the announcement of extension of the SGR to Kisumu.

Governor Nyong’o sees the expansion of the SGR as a catalyst for economic growth in the region and anticipates a significant increase in lake transport.

Then, the Ministry of Transportation announced that the government plans to complete 35% of the project by December 2024.
