West Bloomfield board to discuss Priority’s performance as trash hauler – The Oakland Press

The West Bloomfield Township Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on Monday, December 16 to discuss Priority Waste’s performance under its contract.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 4550 Walnut Lake Road. A regular meeting will follow at 6 p.m.

The board also plans to hold a closed session to meet with its attorney regarding a communication related to the township’s waste collection. The closed session is permitted under the Michigan Open Meetings Act, according to an agenda issued by Clerk Debbie Binder.

Priority Waste purchased GFL Environmental and began picking up trash, recyclables and yard waste in West Bloomfield and dozens of other Detroit-area communities on July 1.

Residents reported “abominable” service in June, the last month GFL held the contract, said former township Supervisor Steve Kaplan.

When Priority took over July 1, its crews had to make up for services that hadn’t been provided, and the company “struggled” for the first two weeks, Kaplan said in August. He said services subsequently improved, although residents continue to complain.

Kaplan resigned as supervisor effective December 5. The board voted Monday, Dec. 9, to appoint Trustee Jonathan Warshay as supervisor.

Priority officials said GFL misrepresented the number of trucks in poor condition at the time of the sale. Company officials say they are working to repair the trucks or acquire new ones.

A number of Oakland County communities are considering using other trash haulers when their contracts with Priority expire.
