Lions named as possible landing spot for $5 million waiver

THE Detroit Lions will look to extend their winning streak to 12 games on Sunday, as the team hosts the Buffalo Bills at Ford Field in Week 15. Dan Campbell’s team is 12-1 and alone holds the No. 1 seed in the NFC for 14 weeks.

Although the Lions’ offense is one of the most dynamic units in the league, Detroit’s defense is the backbone of the team. Although ravaged by injuries, Aaron Glenn’s unit only allowed 18 points per game And 93.9 rushing yards per game this season, both are ranked in the top five.

The Lions defense currently has 13 defensive players on injured reserve heading into Week 15, including linebackers Alex Anzalone and Malcolm Rodriguez. Anzalone broke his forearm during Detroit’s Week 11 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars and is not expected to return until the playoffs, while Rodriguez he tore his ACL during the team’s Week 13 victory against the Chicago Bear and is out for the year.

Although Detroit has taken corresponding measures to combat the injuries of Anzalone and Rodriguez, signing of David Long Jr. on November 18 and Kwon Alexandre on November 29, the Lions could use a little more depth at the position.

For this reason, The Mirror’s Jeremy Goldstein believes Detroit is a potential landing spot for San Francisco 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell.

Dan Campbell’s Lions team went 12-1 despite a myriad of injuries on the defensive side of the football, including that of star player Aidan Hutchinson.

The team now faces the absence of middle linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez. With fellow teammate Jack Campbell still in his second season, Campbell could demonstrate some veteran leadership.

Last Thursday against the Green Bay Packers, Detroit relied on a hodgepodge of Al-Quadin Muhammed, Trevor Nowaske and Ezekiel Turner to make plays in the middle of their defense.

Campbell started 12 games for San Francisco this season in the absence of Dre Greenlaw, who tore his left Achilles tendon during Super Bowl LVIII. Greenlaw returned to the lineup during the 49ers’ Thursday Night Football game against the Los Angeles Ramspushing Campbell to the bench.

When asked to enter the game during the third quarter of the team’s Week 15 contest against the Rams, Campbell told head coach Kyle Shanahan that he did not want to play and left the game in the second half. Shanahan announced Friday that the veteran linebacker won’t be a part of the team moving forward. But San Francisco is still working out the semantics of how to handle the situation.

According to NFL Network’s Ian RapoportCampbell’s release or suspension are the options on offer.

While Campbell could provide the Lions with quality veteran depth at linebacker if the 49ers release him, the 31-year-old is clearly not a good teammate and is extremely selfish. Detroit should stick with what they have at linebacker instead of signing a waiver who would fit terribly into head coach Dan Campbell’s culture.
