Government likely to propose creation of JPC to examine ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill | News from India

The government will likely propose the creation of a JPC to examine the bill

NEW DELHI: The government should propose the creation of a joint parliamentary committee to examine the ‘One nation, one election‘ (ONOE) Bill.
The 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill is likely to be introduced into the Lok Sabha Tuesday. Former Minister of Justice Kiren Rijijuwho will present the bill, is expected to discuss the creation of a JPC for broader consultations on the bill.
Political parties will submit the names of their respective MPs, based on their strength in the Lok Sabha, for the JPC. The JPC will be announced by the President on the same day of the introduction.
The committee will likely have a three-term window, although that deadline could be extended. Sources said the JPC consultations could involve all stakeholders, including elected representatives of states, since the bill proposes to reduce the term limits of state/UT assemblies.
Two ONOE-related Bills are listed for introduction in the Lok Sabha: the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Laws of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill ), 2024.
