Lynn Forbes on dealing with grief at Christmas

Lynn Forbes has a special message for her grieving family members this holiday season. The motivational speaker, who is the mother of the late rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes, took to Instagram to talk about the gift of grace.

AKA and his friend Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were shot dead outside a restaurant on Florida Road in Durban in February 2023.

“This Christmas I want to share something deeply personal and meaningful,” Lynn captioned a photo of herself visiting her son’s grave. She explained what she learned about grace while dealing with her grief.

“In the midst of grief, I learned that grace is not just for others; it is a gift we must also give to ourselves. It is about choosing to let go of pain, to forgive wrongs caused and heal in some way that honors both ourselves and others When we accept that the behavior of others has more to do with their internal struggles than we do.

Lynn encouraged her 384,000 followers to give themselves grace.

“This season, I invite you to show grace, especially when it is hardest to do so. Even in sorrow or struggle, joy lies in the simple blessings of life: a smile, a laugh or the heat of the sun,” she said.

AKA passed away almost two years ago, but his legacy lives on through his music and his daughter, Kairo Forbes. The nine-year-old won a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award in July and dedicated it to her father.

“I hope that I inspire other children to have dreams and that they have a family that supports their dreams. Thank you, God for all your blessings. This one is for you, Dad!” she said.
