Arctic Wolf to acquire BlackBerry’s Cylance assets for $160 million

The security operations platform provider said it will enhance its platform with the integration of “Cylance’s pioneering suite of endpoint security features.”

Arctic Wolf announced Monday that it will enhance its security operations platform with the planned acquisition of “pioneering” endpoint security tool Cylance from its owner, BlackBerry.

The acquisition is valued at $160 million in cash, plus shares in privately held Arctic Wolf, and focuses on Cylance terminal security “assets,” Arctic Wolf said.

BlackBerry paid $1.4 billion to acquire fast-growing Cylance in 2018, at a time when the company was a newcomer in endpoint security, competing with established players in the market while eyeing a IPO.

Cylance has become a centerpiece of BlackBerry’s reinvention as a provider of cybersecurity offerings, following the vendor’s move away from the mobile device market.

In a press release Monday, Arctic Wolf called Cylance a “pioneer in AI-powered endpoint protection” trusted by “thousands of organizations” around the world.

Arctic Wolf plans to leverage Cylance technology to “harden” its security operations platform, which already includes MDR (managed detection and response) combined with features such as vulnerability management, managed security awareness and cloud security.

The platform will be significantly enhanced “with the addition of Cylance’s pioneering suite of endpoint security capabilities and enhanced AI capabilities,” Arctic Wolf said in the release.

Besides $160 million in cash, the BlackBerry deal includes 5.5 million common shares of Arctic Wolf, which has been valued at $4.3 billion by its investors and has considered an IPO on the stock market.

The deal is expected to close during BlackBerry’s fourth fiscal quarter, which ends at the end of February 2025.
