Russia is demanding an incredible amount of money, 20 decillion US dollars (33 zeros), from one of the world’s largest technology companies, Google.

Reports show that Google owes the Kremlin a decillion 2 rubles (36 zeros) after refusing to pay fines accrued for blocking pro-Russian channels on YouTube.

This staggering fine amounts to 20 decillion dollars, or approximately 20 trillion dollars, which far exceeds the size of the global economy.

By comparison, the International Monetary Fund estimates global gross domestic product at around $110 trillion, which seems modest compared to the figure requested from Google. Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has a market value of around $2 trillion.

This week, Russia’s official TASS news agency reported that a Russian court had already ordered Google to restore a number of YouTube channels, several of which have been blocked since 2022. If Google does not comply, fines will double every week.

Asked about the lawsuit on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov admitted that he “can’t even pronounce this figure correctly” but stressed that the enormous sum is “filled with symbolism.” He said Google “should not restrict the actions of our broadcasters on its platform.”
