Surrey student designs new-look bookmobile

SURREY, N.D. (KMOT) – A jaw-dropping reaction: That’s what Surrey seventh-grader Sophia Carlton experienced after seeing her artwork displayed on the Ward County bookmobile.

The previous Bookmobile itself had not changed since 2011.

Today, 12-year-old Sophia holds the title of designer of the mobile library for years to come.

She said the inspiration came from a series of fantasy books she read called “The Land of Stories.”

Sophia said she loved reading the series so much that her grandmother bought her the set.

“I went to the Bookmobile every hour at school and I was the last one to leave. Everyone would say “Come on! “So I wanted to take a moment to myself and draw the Bookmobile,” Sophia said.

Sophia said she took a few days to think about the design and about a full day to draw it.

She used colored pencils, markers and watercolor.

She said there were some setbacks after she was chosen, such as her works being too pixelated when enlarged.

But Sophia said it didn’t disappoint her.

“My message to people is: if something happens, never give up, because out of bad things comes good things,” Sophia said.

Ward County said Sophia’s was chosen from a handful of applications.
