CIOD Nigeria launches mentoring program to improve corporate governance in the country

THE Chartered Institute of Directors of Nigeria (CIOD) launched a mentoring program aimed at fostering a culture of excellence in corporate governance. The program, which was launched in the first quarter of 2022, is designed to train the next generation of directors and leaders, provide guidance and support to professionals facing complex governance issues and improve the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses in the future. global scale.

The launch event, which took place on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 at the Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos, was attended by dignitaries including the President and Chairman of the Board, Alhaji Tijjani M. BorodoLLM, F.CIoD, the outgoing president, Dr Ije JidenmaDF.CIoD, Group Managing Director (GMD) of FBN Holdings, Nnamdi Okonkwoand immediate past President of the International Chamber of Commerce – Nigeria, Dr Olusegun Osunkeye.

In his opening remarks, Borodo highlighted that the mentoring program aims to foster a culture of excellence in corporate governance, train the next generation of directors and managers, provide guidance and support to professionals facing complex governance issues and to improve the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses globally. .

In his words,

Mentoring is a powerful tool for personal and professional growth. It provides a safe space for learning, reflection and exploration. Our mentors are seasoned professionals with extensive experience in corporate governance, leadership and management. They will share their expertise, experiences and networks to support the development of our mentees.

In his keynote address, Nnamdi Okonkwo, M.CIoD, highlighted the importance of mentorship in shaping one’s career. He shared his personal experience becoming CEO of Fidelity Bank at the age of 42 thanks to mentoring.

The CIOD Nigeria Mentoring Program is designed to be transformative, providing a safe space for learning, reflection and exploration. The program will connect mentees with experienced mentors who will share their expertise, experiences and networks to support their development.

It aims to foster a culture of excellence in corporate governance, train the next generation of directors and managers, provide advice and support to professionals, resolve complex governance issues and improve the competitiveness of Nigerian companies on a global scale.
