Ravichandran Ashwin has distanced himself from his father’s comments alleging that the Indian cricketer was constantly humiliated, which may have contributed to him announcing his retirement midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.

“My father is not trained in the media, dey father Enna of Ithelaam (Oh, Dad, what’s all this),” Ashwin posted.

“I never thought you would follow this rich tradition of ‘Daddy Statements’. I ask you all to forgive him and leave him alone,” he added.

Ravichandran, Ashwin’s father had said it CNN News18: “I also found out at the last minute, actually. What was going through his mind, I don’t know. He just announced it. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I didn’t feel any feelings about it. But the way he gave his retirement, part of it I was very happy, part of it I wasn’t happy because he should have continued.”

“(Retiring) is his (Ashwin’s) wish and desire, I can’t interfere with it, but the way he gave it, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, perhaps a humiliation,” he added.

Ashwin dropped a bombshell on Wednesday when he announced his retirement from high-level cricket at the end of the drawn third Test against Australia in Brisbane. He returned to Chennai the same evening and was warmly welcomed by his family and friends on Thursday morning.

Ashwin had told the media in Brisbane that he had “a bit of oomph left”, hinting at reasons beyond just the game of cricket.

Washington Sundar was chosen ahead of the seasoned off-spinner, who has 537 Test wickets, for the first match in Perth. The 38-year-old has found a place in the playing XI for the Pink Ball Test in Adelaide.

However, Ashwin was once again benched for the third Test at the ‘Gabba’ as Ravindra Jadeja started this match.

Ashwin will continue to play club cricket and will feature for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL next year.
