As per the National Education Policy, Delhi University (DU) is planning to introduce a one-year postgraduate (PG) program from 2026. The draft proposal for this program will be discussed in a meeting of the Academic Council on December 27.

The new framework aligns with the curriculum and credit framework for postgraduate programs released by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

Although some changes were made to the plan, some teachers criticized it, saying its approval was rushed.

Overview of DU’s FYUP and PG course options

DU has already implemented a four-year undergraduate program (FYUP), with students currently in their third semester. This program allows students to:

  • Get a certificate after completing the first year.
  • Get a degree after two years.
  • Get a degree after three years.
  • Receive a diploma with honors after completing the fourth year.

Students who complete the three-year undergraduate program can opt for a two-year PG course, while those who complete the four-year program are eligible for the one-year PG course.

  • Four-Year Undergraduate Program (FYUP) Graduates: Can earn a PG degree in one year, provided they meet specific requirements during their fourth year, such as completing a thesis, field work, or publishing research in SCOPUS journals.
  • Graduates of the three-year undergraduate program: Can get PG diploma after one year or complete two years to get PG diploma.

DU prepares separate study programs for one-year and two-year PG programs.

Credit system

  • One Year PG Program: Students will complete 22 credits per semester, for a total of 44 credits.
  • Two-year PG program: Students will earn 88 credits. As per UGC norms, the one-year diploma will be at level 7, while the two-year diploma will be at level 6.5.

DU is working on implementing this system under the new educational framework.
